AMARUA BLOCK

TO BE OPENED SHORTLY.

The survey of the Awarua 1b block has been completed, and the land will be thrown open for selection within a month or two. The block lies on the eastern or left bank of the Rangitikei river south of the Mangatera Gorge, the land running up the slopes of the Ruahine ranges. One part of the block is within thirteen miles of Mangaweka, access being from Utiku, on the Main Trunk line. The river flats are 1400 ft above the sea, and the general elevation varies from that level up to 2500 ft. The open river flats are suitable for ploughing or cropping, and the slopes fo-r sheepfarming. A portion of the estate, amounting to 7428 acre®, will he cut up into eleven sections, varying in area from 290 to 830 acres. It is proposed to bring this land under (he provisions of the Bush and Swamp Lands Act, which will pro r vide for exemption from - rates and rents, for four years. Another portion of the block, 7068 acres, has been subdivided into two small grazing runs of 4558 acres and 2510 acres respectively. It is also proposed to bring this under the Bush and Swamp Bands Act. There is very valuable timber on 3795 acres of the block, and the right to remove this will be put up at auction for cash in three lots. Approximately there are 31,635.000 superficial feet. Numerous inquiries are already reaching the department - and the Board regarding the Awarua block.
