CHINESE ON THE RAND

TSE-TSU-SIHAN’S CHARGES. “UNWORTHY OF INVESTIGATION.” (Received August 16, 10.35 p.m.) LONDON, August 16. In consequence of the statement sent to the “ Daily Chronicle ” recently by a Chinaman named Tse-tsu-shan, giving circumstantial stories of ill-treatment of Chinese coolies at the Rand mines, Mr Richard Bell, M.P. (a prominent labour unionist) wrote to Mr Lyttelton, Secretary of State for the Colonies, making inquiries. Mr Lyttelton, in reply, quotes documentary evidence exposing Tse-tsu-shan’s antecedents, and adds: “Allegations from such a source are unworthy of investigation.”

A FARM ATTACKED. CAPETOWN, August 15. Fourteen Chinese coolies on the East Rand deserted and attacked a farm. The occupier used his revolver, killing three. The remaining Chinamen thereupon decamped.

BOER FARMER MURDERED. CAPETOWN, August 18. A number of Chinese "coolies escaped from the Rand, and murdered a farmer named Joubert, at Bronkhorst Spruit, also injuring his wife and child. They then looted the farmhouse.
