An A.B. who has arrived at Greenock from Vancouver on the Glasgow ship Falklandbaiik has a record which is surely unique. He has been thirty years oil British deep-sea sailing ships, he has never been on steamers, lie has never been shipwrecked, and he has never been on a ship on which any drowning or other fatal accidents have occurred. He has been ill at sea on I twice, he has never been the worse for drink or in the hands of the police, he has never been employed on shore, and lie has sailed round the world twentythree times. This at least is the sun y, as it emanates from the Sailors 5 Home, and there is nothing •improbable about it except perhaps the item about having sailed round the world twentythree times in thirty years on sail mg ships. In this particular respect the record is not likely to be beaten. Among the few American inventions which are on disc lav at the Naval Ship-
ping and Fisheries Exhibition at Earl's Court, London, this summer, a fullsized working exhibit of the Long-Arm System of electrically operated watertight power doors has attracted great attention from the large number of naval experts who have visited tiie dis- - play. This system, from a central station located at a convenient point on the bridge of the ship, closes the doors and hatches of the vessel in time of emergency, providing for the local safety of men involved bv a liberty action attached to each door. The device has now been installed on some thirty American men-of-war, and the Admiralty Department of numerous foreign governments are interesting themselves in the system with a view to placing it on all their own ships. In addition to the exhibit at Earl’s Court, there is another full-size working exhibit on display at 39, Victoria street, London.
Long detention at Newcastle. New South Wales (says “Fairplay”) is a very expensive bit of business to sailing shipowners on account of frequent shifting, which entails the employment of a couple of tugs, costing £3 and a pilot, for whose services £4 10s per shift for the first tnree shifts are charged, and half that rate ?or all succeeding moves—which works out a heavy bill in the long run. Shipmasters assert that much of the shifting Is done in order to provide work for the tugs and pilots, but it is hardly credible that such a state of things can exist*. At the same time, so long as the employment of charterers’ tugs is compulsory, it. would be well that the old saw about Caesar’s wife should be borne in mind by those concerned in the business. The long-talked of possibility of towing oil barges across the Atlantic has at last been put into effect by the Standard Oil Company. The steamer Col. E. L. Drake left an American port on July 3rd with Barge 95 in tow for London. The- barge is a 4000-ton steel craft and ought to be able to do the , trick in good shape. Of course the principal thing is in the towing and the master of the steamer has had long experience in that line. Both vessels are equipped with DeForest wireless apparatus in case of the hawsers parting. From London the vessels will go to Port Arthur, Texas, for more oil. Further developments in this trade vail be watched with much interest.
Advices from the Clyde in regard to the shipbuilding outlook confirm the report that recent revelations in shipping finance and management axe not calculated to strengthen the confidence ■of investors in shipping property, and, as a matter of fact, it is notorious that just now investors are fighting very shy of shipping. There are several instances lately in which appeals have been made for capital, alike by old and new shipping companies, without any satisfactory response. Of course, there are always old-established companies and firms which enjov a measure of public confidence, and deservedly so, but new ventures are regarded with indifference, if not suspicion, and it is now not nearly so easy to “get up a boat” as it used to be.
A good side-light upon the efficiency of the Japanese navy is thrown by a conversation recently had with a representative of the English shipbuilding firm that has constructed many of the best of the Japanese ships. This gentle>man, according to a personal informant of “Shipping Illustrated,” now in New York, stated that he had very much rather build warships for the British Admiralty or any other nation, because the Japanese are so exceedingly particular. Their trials of the vessels built for them “are so exhaustive, to the remotest degree, and the specifications so exacting, that compliance with requirements ineans perfection in every respect so far as it is possible for man to make tilings perfect.
In an interview in the “Pall Mall Gazette/ 5 Sir William Mulock, Post-master-General of Canada, is credited with saying that Canada will ultimately command the entire mail traffic between tiie British Isles and the North American Continent. “Our port of Sydney, C. B., 55 said Sir William, “gives- Canada a geographical advantage of 3000 miles. Let us have steamships of but an average speed of 19 knots, and with the complete railway system which Canada will possess we could deliver the mails in Chicago and New York sooner by a single day of 24 hours at least than the fastest steamers which might sail to New *ork. This will come. Nowadays commerce cannot wait, and is not bound by hard and fast rules of place or nationality. What is wanted is the earliest and the fastest mail, and Canada will give this by way of Sydney, Cape Breton. 55 A correspondent writes to “Fairplay” of a visit to the German East African Co.’s steamer Prinzregent. Among other things found there is a little card printed in German and Elnglish anc entitled : “Hints to Passengers. 55 Some of the most notable hints are: “Be careful at meal-times, when it is rough, to hold your glass over your neighbour’s lap 55 ; “After using your toothpick, leave it so that your neighbour may have a good view of it’ 5 ; “Retire to rest as Tate as possible, and be sure to make as much noise as you conveniently can when coming down the stall’s 55 ; “When in your cabin, always, when possible, move your luggage at night 55 ; and other useful little hints of this kind for the guidance and comfort of the passengers. “Although resident in Germany for some time,” adds the correspondent, “I never discovered German h imour of this tv os in the Fatherland
