NEW ZEALAND CUP WEIGHTS. , The following handicaps have been declared by Mr J. E. Henrys for the New Zealand Cup, of 2000 sovs. second horse to receive 300 sovs, and third 200 sovs from the stake. Two miles (run November 4th): —
This year the declaration of the handicaps for the New Zealand Cup was fixed several weeks later than in former years. The altered conditions providing for penalties for winners after the declaration - of handicaps may account for the comparatively light scale of weights adopted. Out of seventy horses handicapped, the original number of entries was seventy-two. Only two (Achilles and Nightfall) have been handicapped up to - weight-for-age form. Nineteen have been given the lowest weight provided by the 'rules. Half the horses engaged are within 31b of the bottom, and forty-one in the 7st and below division. The list should undergo considerable reduction when the firstacceptance is made on September Ist. Patronus and Manawaru have already taken up . stud duty; Nonette, Orloff, St. Michael, Bulawayo, Convoy, General Symons, Joe Chamberlain. Melwood, and others engaged may not stand the severe preparation necessary for such a long journey. Although Achilles has 61b less than he was awarded last year, it should be borne in mind that the highest impost ever carried to victory in the face is 8.9.\ The writer was prepared to see. Mahu tonga closer to Achilles. Nightfall, who had the last Cup at her mercy had she been started, has more than her weight-f or-age. and will consequently not get any additional weight should she succeed at Randwick next, month. As a rule, Mr Stead does not start horses in long distance handicap events under heavy weights, and one of the. three-year-olds may represent Yaldhurst. The best of the four youngsters engaged Mr Henrys considers to be Noctuiform (brother to Nightfall). Should he show winning form at Sydney, he will only be raised from 7.5 to 7.6. The other Yaldhurst horses handicapped are Sungod, Forcelain, and Golden Knight, who was seen out at Riecarton last "week. The "writer prefers a good three-year-old to horses handicapped such as the three top weights are. Mr Mason will have a ‘‘pull” over the trainers in this colony m getting his horses raced into form at Randwick. Vladimir, after his Great Autumn Handicap win, is no longer treated as a sprinter. Of the others, Qarryman, Gladstone, Scotty, and Paritutu have performances over a distance of ground to recommend them. At short notice and -with limited space, it is not the writer’s intention to criticise .a handicap which has taken weeks to compile. . That will be left for some future occasion. The form at Randwick may disclose the winner of the race, as was the case a year ago. MARTON JOCKEY CLUB. m, , .
