The Government has acquired Mr Cole’s property, of about fifteen acres, at Petone, for the purposes of workmen’s homes. The price paid is £9OOO. Bushfelling and clearing have commenced on the line to be followed by the Trunk railway between Karioi and Makatote. The train is running to within twelve chains of the Mataroa tunnel. The recent accidents at the racecourse have drawn attention to the need for a “ horse ambulance ” at the Riocarton course (says the “ Lyttelton Times ”). An ambulance in which an injured or dead horse could be removed from the track would cost about £6O. At present nothing of the sort is available. Satisfactory progress is being made with the rock base for the Campbell statue at the main entrance to Cornwall Park, though there is not much to show at present for a large amount of very hard work (says the “ Auckland Herald”). Some of the stones used in the work, which have been put in position, weigh several tons.
