MR J. C MADDISON.

Mr Joseph Clarkson Maddisoh, who fe the successful applicant for the design 'of the International Exhibition building in Christchurch, is a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects, and is well known as one of the leading architects in New Zealand. He was articled in London to Mr G. Morris, a wellknown London architect. Mr Maddison

commenced practice in the colony soon after his arrival. In 1879 competitive designs'' were called throughout the colonies for a town hail and municipal buildings for Christchurch, and Mr Maddison’® were placed first and second. He has also designed and carried out a large number of important buildings not only in Christchurch, but in other parts of the colony. Among those in Christchurch are the warehouse and offices of the Kaiapoi Woollen Manufacturing Company, a large block of shops at the

comer of Colombo and Cashel street®

occupied by Messrs McClea and Co., and yßallantyne and Co., Mason, Struthers and Co. s, Limited, warehouse and offices, Chrystal and Co.’s, premises occupied by Messrs Milner and Thompson, and Malings buildings in Worcester street. The following hotels in Christchurch were also designed and carried out by Mr J. C. Maddison:—Lancaster Park, Southern Gross, Central, Clarendon, Criterion, Carlton, Foresters, Prince of Wales, Crown, Zetland, and Al. Besides these there are a number of large and important buildings, among them being a large flour mill at Addington for Messrs Wood and Co., Limited, Wardell’s premises, Cashel street, large additions to Manning and Co.’s brewery, Crown Brewery, buildings for Sir Westby Percival, private residences for Sir

George Clifford, Messrs F. Waymouth, Cecil Louisson, and a number of others. Of works Mr Maddison has de•signed those at Mataura, Belfast. Fairfield, Pareora, and Waitara, as well as the additions for the Wellington Meat Export Company, and is at the present time carrying out large works at Hastings, Nelson, Masterton, and Wellington, and warehouses in Christchurch. For freezing works alone during the last few years works costing £397,000 have passed through Mr Maddison’6 hands.
