FEILDING.
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
We are at present in a condition of mild exasperation through the sewage works ripping up the centre of the streets. Butchers and bakers cannot call on many of their customers and traffic generally is incommoded. At one time Feilding was a hotbed of scandal, but some of the inhabitants leaving and a few being warmly threap ened, it became quite peaceful and pleasant. From rumours of several contemplated actions for slander it would seem as if some of the old leven is working up a new ferment. A party of holiday seekers made an Easter trip to Botowairi. They saw the sports at Tailiape, including some clever lassoing and riding by Australian experts. They saw the progress of the Main Trumc line, wliioh is not very great as nearly every gang of men were either smoking, loafing, larking, or sleeping, though it should not be overlooked that at one place a man who seemed either a ganger or an outcast was playing with a pick. They had some rough travelling, and camped within ken of a volcano. They shot a few ducks and enjoyed themselves mightily, and they speak highly of the accommodation and attendance at Gretna Hotel, Tailiape, which seems to have deserved a cheap advertisement. Five-roomed cottages are still being erected all over Feilding, and will give the town a character of its own. Money seems plentiful, and swarms of new faces arrive daily.
