The annual meeting of the Hutt VaLLey Rifle V olunteers was held at Lower Hutt on Friday. There was a fair attendance of members. The financial position of the company—notwithstanding that considerable expense had been incurred through purchase of uniforms —was shown to be satisfactory. The membership on February 28 th was eixty-five. The resignation of Lieutenant C. E. Holland was received with regret. It was decided that a drill hail was necessary, and a committee was set up for the purpose, and it is hoped that ere long the object will be achieved. Shooting wa6 carried on with enthusiasm, and the company is now in possession of a handsome shield. The final match for this is to b© fired on June 3rd.

Our Upper Hutt correspondent writes: —Air George Whiteman, a very old. resident in the district, died at an early hour on Saturday morning. The old gentleman- arrived in Wellington in 1841 in the ship Gertrude, Captain Stead. With him were his father, brother, and sister. He was one of the militia that fought against Te Rauparaha, and was well able to relate incidents that happened m connection with Ain ori troubles iri the Hutt Valley right through to Paikakariki. _ Ho was in the engagement at Horokiwi Valley. Air Whiteman was bom in Kent in IS2B. He leaves five sons, the eldest being Councillor John Whiteman, of the Hutt County Council. The funeral took place on Sunday at the Church of England cemetery, a great assemblage being present.
