PAHIATUA

A special meeting of the Pahiatua Hospital trustees was held on the 18th inst., to discuss the-bequest of the late Mr W. R. Williams, who recently left £ISOO to the Pahiatua Hospital. After some discussion the trustees resolved to spend £2OO in improving the grounds, £25 in pictures and photographs to be placed in the hospital to the memory of Mr Williams, and £2OO on additional surgical instruments for the institution.
A sitting of the* Assessment Court was held here on the 24th inst. Forty-five objections were received, but only six objectors put in an appearance. In five of these cases the objections were dismissed, and in one instance the Government valuation was reduced by £1 per acre over 112 acres. On the evening of the 20th a chimney in the shop occupied by Mr T. B. Hunter, music seller, took fire, and, owing to the high wind raging at the time, burned furiously. Tile Fire Brigade, however, put in an appearance, and the flames were at length extinguished without any damage having been done. Mr J. Mills, for many years foreman for Mr J. C. Taylor, tinsmith, has started in business on his own account in premises in Main street.
A team of quoit players from the Mangatainoka Quoit Club played a match with the Opaki Quoit Club at Masterton on Wednesday last, and suffered defeat by the narrow margin of seven points. The local team speak'in eulogistic terms of the hospitality accorded them by the Opaki players, and it is intended to arrange for a return match in Pahiatua at a future date.
