OPUNAKE
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
Tho weather still continues to be very wet, and those farmers whose cows are coming in are having an anxious time, while the grass has not yet made any, growth. Despite the weather on Wednesday afternoon a large number of Opunake sports journeyed to Mr Shore’s farm, at Oeo, to witness a coursing contest between two locally owned dogs, Rowdy and Carbine, owned respectively by Messrs O’Connor and Pepperell. Mr Geo. Newsham set the dogs going, and after a good run Rowdy was do lared winner by the judges, Messrs Crane and Trotter. After the match Mr Pepperell entertained the visitors at afternoon tea. Subsequently a second match, between Messrs D. Carroll’s Speed and Yanale’s Dart, was run, the former being the winner. On the evening of August 24th inst., a very successful concert and dance was held m the Town Hall in connection with the Church of England. A new society, the Opunake Glee Club, faced the audience for the first time and acquitted itself remarkably well. Songs were contributed by Misses Dempsey, Lewis Loudon and Mr Chambers, recitations by the Rev. Rawnsley and Mr Craig, and Mr D. Ross danced a Highland fling in a very pleasing manner. At the annual general meeting of the Oaonui Co-operative Dairy Co., held on Aug. 20th, about thirty shareholders were present. The balance-sheet showed that the finances of the company are in a very satisfactory state. The ballot for three directors to fill vacancies resulted in the election of the following gentlemen. Messrs T. J. Billing, J. H. Bleatojey, and J. Young.
