Our pioneer friend. Captain Jackson Barry, a colonial of seventy-five years, is once more in eAddenee, canvassing for his neAV book, Avhich is noAV in the hands of the printers. The captain is a Avonder at his age—eighty-four years. To stand the fatigue he does is surprising. The veteran had one of his legs broken two years ago at NeAV Plymouth, when saving a lady from being run over by a train, and Avas under the doctor for about sixteen months. He is, hoAvever, able to get about, and has so far been very successful in getting orders. The Captain can Avell claim to be one of the founders of three great British colonies, for he ivas in Melbourne in 1825, and stood Avhere Queen street, Auckland, noAV is, in 1837, when it Avas a fern-clad gully, Avith not a vestige of a Avhite man’s dwelling, or a Avhite man’s face Avas to be seen, and about that time also was at Port Essington, NeAV South Wales, Avhere he took cattle for the, settlement established there. He Avas also in New Plymouth Avhen Mr E. Carrington, Avho was laying off that toAvn in 1842, had to take shelter in Dickie Barrett’s whare, as he was stopped and threatened by the natives. Several Auckland and southern friends have read the manuscript of his neiv book, and they declare it Avill be one of the most interesting volumes ever published in the colonies. Photographs of no feAver than eighty leading men of the colonies, including four Governors, and short autobiographies of each, and of Lord Ranfurly, Governor of NeAV Zealand, will appear, and photographs of the Hon. R. Seddon, Premier, and his Ministry, and Premiers and members of earlier Ministries.” The publishers “The Brett Publishing Company,” of Auckland, intimate that the first edition Avill be ready for issue early in January.— “Star,” Auckland.
