BURGLARY AND THEFT.
AUCKLAND, August 22. Last night a burglary took place at tho Manuka<u Hotel, Onehunga. This morning it was discovered that thieves had been at work at the side window, which had been prized open and an entrance effected. The cash drawer, which contained about £7 ss, as well a 3 some cheques, was removed, and the account books were also missing. Subsequently, the drawers, books, cheques and other papers were discovered on a vacant allotment. A rusty cold-chisel and a small joiner’s chisel were found in the bar, which indicate that those who entered were amateurs at burglary. In the Magistrate’s C urt to-day, Sydney Gardener and Arthur Johnson, a»ias Bolton, charged with burglary at the Paeroa Railway Station, and witli haring housebreaking implements in their possession, were committed for trial. Witnesses deposed that portions of a gelignite wrapper and a fuse were found in the hut of the accused similar to the fuse and paper found at the scene of the burglary.
- DUNEDIN, August .22. Frederick Luiul and Edward Robinson, two troopers, who returned by the Orient, wero charged to-day with stealing from a Crimean veteran a watch, medals and money. The prosecutor could not recognise the troopers, and a$ the only evidence against Robinson was that he was waiting outside a pawn shop where Luud tried to dispose of the watch, the case against- him was dismissed. Lund then pleaded guilty to stealing the watch, but denied taking the other articles. He was remanded to the SuDreme Court for sentence. Lund then pleaded guilty to stealing a pair of blankets from the quarantine camp at Tahuna Park. His solicitor argued that it was only a technical theft, accused not- appreciating tha fact, as a host of other troopers took away their blankets.
