A NINTH CONTINGENT
APPEAL FROM BRITISH GOVERNMENT. ANOTHER THOUSAND MEN WANTED. Surprise was expressed in the city on Monday when it became known that the Ninth Contingent hinted at by the Premier in his speech at the Theatre Royal on Friday was soon to be made an accomplished fact. A circular telegram, in the flowing terms, has been sent out to-members of Parliament:— “His Majeiijrs Government has by cable i&ersage just to hand informed the New Zealand Government that another contingent of 1000 men would gladly be accepted on the same terms as the Eighth, and without expense to the colony. It will no doubt be apparent to you that this further Empire’s call would not be made unless the men were required. Kindly wire your views.” The character of the majority of the replies received justified the Premier in yesterday having a reply forwarded to the Secretary of State for the Colonies informing him that the contingent asked for would be raised.
It will be remembered that the applications for inclusion in the Eighth Contingent, now almost ready for embarkation, far exceeded the number of men required. The names of all suitable applicants were recorded, and this measure will facilitate the enrolment of the Ninth Contingent. In the latest contingent, country districts will, it is stated, have a liberal representation.
