The body of a man was noticed floating in the harbour last Monday by some wharf officials. Constable Cookery secured the body, which proved to be that of a man between sixty and seventy years of age. He had been of sallow complexion, with grey eyes, whiskers and hair of the same colour; in height about oft Gin, and in weight about lOst. The body was clothed in brown trousers and vest, black coat, black shoes and dark woollen socks, blue striped shirt and black tie. In a small pocket-book found on the body was the address: “J. G. Brown, Oakburne Station, "Wallingford, Hawke’s Bay.” The appearance of tho body indicated that it had been in the water for about four or five hours. The body was taken to the morgue. So far it has not been identified.

After inspecting the Otira section of the Midland railway and visiting the West Coast, Mr V. G. Bogue, the American railway engineer, and officers of the Public Works Department, have returned to Wellington. In regard to the question of a tunnel at Arthur’s Pass, Mr Bogue has obtained a great deal of data. His report will ho submitted to the Government in due course. Questioned as to his visit, Mr Bogue said that from Patterson’s creek to Sloven’s creek, on tho other side of Staircase gully, was a very heavy piece of work, and what had been done appeared to have been well carried out. He considered the tunnel work good. The bridge over Staircase gully would be a large undertaking, but nothing really extraordinary. It was quite a safe place to build a bridge, and he had no doubt that when the structure was completed it would prove very satisfactory. Tho engineers, he said, evidently knew what they were about. Work at Patterson’s creek was to commence shortly, and would bo a large undertaking also. Mr Rogue’s visit to the Riniutaka a couple of weeks ago was made for the purpose of seeing the Fell engines at work, as it has been proposed to use that system on part of the Midland railway. Mr Bogue wishes to catch the next outward San Francisco steamer.
