GENERAL CABLES

OTTAWA, August 5. Canada i s so anxious for the consummation of the great Imperial project that she has waived the objection raised by her in connection with the Pacific cable, although it is still contended that the privileges granted by New South Wales to the Eastern Extension Company are inimical to the future of the Pacific scheme.

The Act passed by the Legislature last session dealing with the cable is to be promulgated, and the Dominion announces her readiness to pay fiveeight eenthg of the cost. LONDON, August 4. In the House of Commons a motion was tabled by Mr C. E. Hobhouse, Liberal member for Bristol, for reduction of Mr Chamberlain’s salary. The motion was withdrawn by the mover, but was put at. the instance of Mr J. Dillon, Nationalist member for East Mayo, and negatived by 154 votes against 70.

The ‘‘Daily News” of Saturday, referring to the previous day’s proceedings in the Hons© of Commons, says the front Opposition bench was empty. The Liberal party, deserted and enfeebled, has reached the last stage© of humiliation. As a result of Lord Charles Beresford’s letter to a friend on June 21st, in which he confessed anxiety as to the strength of th© Mediterranean fleet, several thirty knot torpedo destroyers will shortly be sent to strengthen the naval forces on that station.
