CITY COUNCIL
The City Council met on the 31st. Present : His Worship the Mayor, and Councillors Anderson, Smith, Murdoch. Tclhurst, Townsend Evans, Winder. Luke and McGill.
The Mayor informed the Council that at the express desire of his Excellent the Governor it had been decided to take m public only such matters as were rot likely to give rise to discussion. With that object in view, it had been resolved to take a great part of the night's busi ness in committee.
The Public Works Committee recommended: —(1) That the application of Mr F. Penty for sanction to a right-of-way four feet wide at the property cf Mr A. A.. Barnett, town, acre 115, Wil iis street, be granted; (2) that a similar application from Mr Penty re right-of-way at the property of Mrs T. Briggs, town acre 772, Adelaide road, be granted; (3) that- the following cab standi be abolished, as unnecessary : No 1 (Adelaide road), No. 2. (Constable street), No. 6 (lugestrs street). No. 7 (Kent terrace) No. 10 (Majoribanks street), No. 13 (Mansfield street), No. 14 (Nairn street) No. 16 (Sussex square), No. 17 (Sydney street), No. 18 (Taranaki place), No. 19 (Tliorndou quay); (4) that cab proprietors be required to put the numbers of their cabs inside the cabs, as well a: cutsiae; (5) that the petition for repairs to Maarama crescent and Ohirc read be referred to the Street Work? Committee ; (6) that the Building Trades 5 Picnic Committee be informed that. the Council regret that they are unable to grant tfio Corporation workmen a holiday on the 9th February, on the cce? sion of the buiidin gtrades picnic; (7) that proceedings be taken under Clause 354 of the Municipal Corporations Act 1900, to prevent placards being poster on places other than licensed hoardings and that the fee for the license be 2s 6d per annum; (8) that the applicatioi of Mr W. Wood for permission to establish a shooting gallery in the city be not granted. Clauses 1 and 3 of the report were adopted without discussion. Y/itli regard to Clause 4, Councillor Townsend preposed as . an amendment that the number of cabs should be placed on the lamps. A 9 no discussion was permitted, further consideration of Clause 4 was adjourned. Clause 5 was also adjourned . Clauses 6 to 8 were adopted. The Abattoirs Committee reported that it had considered the question of the erection of an abattoir. It was quite clear that the Act required that an abattoir should be established and maintained by this Corporation within one year from the Ist of April, 1901. and the committee therefore recommended that the necessary steps should be taken for such establishment as soon as possible. The committee also recommended that the Council would consider whether it would be advisable to amalgamate with other local as provided in Subclause 4 of Clause 15 of the Act. The consideration of this report was also adjourned. Accounts totalling £2912 18s 3d were passed for payment, and the Council then went into committee.
