Amongst the more notable of the funeral drapings on Saturday were those at Searßs Hotel, Mr W. Barber’s, Cuba street, and at the “Times'’ office. The members of the Rivers Commission reeeutly appointed by the Government to i* ake recommendations with respect to the proclamation of certain Otago and Southland rivers as sludge channels have completed their labours, and sent a report to the Minister of Mines. The Commission recently appointed to deal with the same question in Marlborough, Nelson and Westland consists of Messrs H. A. Gordon, F. R. Flatman, M.H.R., C. W. Adams (Commissioner of Crown Lands in Marlborough), T. Humphries (Commissioner in Nelson), and W. G. Murray (Commissioner in Westland). These gentlemen will also inquire into claims put forward by farmers for damage caused by deposits made by sludge channels in country of an auriferous nature. The Commission meets at Nelson on Tuesday, and Messrs Gordon and Flatman left last night by the Takapuna to attend the first meeting, at which a chairman will be appointed and an itinerary arranged. There are over twenty rivers scheduled in the text of the commission. Mr A. Kay is shorthand writer and secretary to the Commission.
