LATE SPORTING.

WELLINGTON RACING CLUB. SUMMER MEETING. RENOWN WINS THE CUP. The Wellington Racing Clnb was well favoured yesterday in the matter oi weather. A light breeze from the northwest, and a thin fum of smoke from some distant bush fire, tempered the heat rays, and prevented a pleasant summer day from degenerating into a “scorcher” The lawns were m splendid order, and the course, thougn naturally a little hard, was a great deal, better than had been expected. The racing was well conducted the fields being of the best. The attendance was a very large one; and the racing good, though some of the fimsmm lacked excitement owing to the -am that they were those of “on-. horse races. A characteristic of the assembly was the exceptionally artistic gowning of many of the lady visitors. Displayed on the lawn they gave pleasure to all beholders; but when, at the c.ose c ? the day, the tired wearers had to plough through the waste of sand separating those famous racecourse bridges from the railway carriages, the earlier effect was to a great extent destroyed. It was in fact a pitiabu* exhibition. The catering was in charge of Mr Walter Freeman, and though the demands made upon the latter and his staff were naturally of an exacting na rare, both came out of the ordeal satisfactorily. The Garrison Band is to be credited with having treated the habitues of the lawn to a really enjoyable programme of music. Nine horses were saddled for the opening event, the Anniversary Hand.'cap, and that the public considered the handicapper had'.set them a hard task •was evidenced by tne fact that each competitor had a strong following. On the strength of “'information received,” Spicier was made favourite, Melwood on recent racing performances was also largely in demand; whilst a section of investors had not forgort n Phooka’s previous performances at Hutt. Park, and made him a strong order. Perfection also was put about as a “good thing” and well backed. Almost from flagfall it was Melwoocbs .race. Spider performed well in the earlier stages, and Pliooka, running into promience round the back, looked to have the race in hand, but, when the St. Leger colt was called upon, be exhibited all his old dash of pace, and ran home an easy winner in lrnin 44sec. The Maiden Plate brought out a smart field, the ligntly weighted Fashion being made a hot favourite. The Somnus colt was prominent throughout, and redeemed his earlier promise by beating his field off before the straight was reached, and winning somewhat easily from Cadet and Laurestina. in Imin 43 4-ssec.

The public were naturally on tip-too of expectation to know how the Porirua and Hawke’s Bay stables were going to dispose their forces for the Cup. The scratching of Boreas was followed by the removal of Ideal from the list of competitors, and everybody felt a glow of satisfaction at knowing they were about xo see the celebrated Renown measure paces with some of the best gallopers in the colony. Paraded on the lawn, the whole of the contestants left little to be desired in the way of appearance —they were all as fit as hands could make them. Every horse in the race performed well at various stages, but ,the ultimate pace was too hot for the majority of them. Renown’s machine-like momentum pleased all lovers of a racehorse. Holding a good position throughout, and having the pace made by Tortulla just as he liked it, it was no trouble'to him, when called upon at the river-side stables, to leave his field, and run home a winner. It was a magnificent exhibition of pace allied with stamina. and Mr Ormond is to be congratulated, not only on having won the Cup, but on being the possessor of such a splendid piece of horseflesh as Renown. Cceur de Lion, another Hawke’s Bay representative, ,justified his cognomen by the gameness of his finish ini the race. Both he and Paladin were very unlucky to bump against such a phenomenon as Mr Ormond’s representative. The time in which the race was run—2min 35 2-ssec —is a record for the race, and equals the best time ever made in this colony. Contemporary performances are those of Tire in the Hawke’s Bay Cup last year (Mr Gollan’s horse carrying 7st 91b to victory in 2mm 35 2-ssec) and of Merganser in the Great Autumn at Christchurch in 1893 (the Nordenfeldt mare winning in 2min 35-4-sec, with 9st 81b on her back). The best time in which the Wellington Cup has been previously won was 2min 36£sec, by Brooklet, in 1896. . , Mr G. G. Stead was destined to wm a nice double at this meeting. Cruciform beat a fashionably-bred field in the Nursery Handicap with ridiculous ease ; and Menschikoff made a'runaway race of the Wellesley Stakes, Indian Queen being the only performer to get anywhere near the Stepniak colt. Cameo, who was piuch fancied for the President’s Handicap, was made second favourite to the speedy Queen’s Guard, and won the event somewhat easily at the end of a severe race in lmin 56 3-ssec. Strathnairn. who was placed third, ran with unflinching gameness, hut the weight found him out. The well-bred Conspirer, an old habitue of Hutt Park, and an

indifferent performer over a series of years while under the ownership of a Chinese proprietary, followed up his prominent running in the Wairarapa with a rather sensational performance yesterday. Going out in bandages, and doing a rather “ do Ley” preliminary, he nevertheless, finished up with wonderful dash, just managing to snatch victory by a neck from the much-fancied Dartmoor, and paying a dividend id £23 2s to his seventy-nine supporter's, one of whom, a Chinaman, had £5 on the machine. Blazer, who w r as made favourite, won the last race, the Telegraph Handicap, with ridiculous ease, beating a smart field in good time. The amount put through the totalisa. tor during the day w T as £18,743, an increase of £1779 on the amount dealt with on Chip Day last year Appended are details of the racing: Anniversary Handicap, of 150 sovs. One mile. 362 Mr W.
