WELLINGTON SWIMMING CLUB’S SPORTS
There was an attendance of close" on a thousand spectators at the Wellington Amateur Swimming Club’s seventh annual carnival, which was held r,t the Queen's Wharf on Tuesday afternoon. An excellent afternoon’s sport was provided, the swimming of Builio, a Foxton man, being admirable. The customary side sports—in the form of soapy boom, tub races and aquatic tugs-of-war were held, and were provocative of great amusement. An exhibition of high diving was given by Mr G. S. Ilill, for which he received an ovation. The best race of the day was the Provincial Championship, in which Hegglin, of Blenheim, won Iby the barest c-f touches from- Roberts. The City Brass Band played an excellent programme of music during the afternoon. An amusing item was an aquatic farce by Messrs E. J. Fleming, G. S. Hill and T. Shields. Subjoined is a record of each event: Maiden Race, 50yds. First prize, trophy value 20s ■ second, trophy value 10s. —W. J. Bannehr, 1; C. W. Neilson, 2. Time, 40 l-ssee. Provincial Championship, 100yds. First prize, gold medal; second, silver medal.—E. T. Hegglin, 1; F. Roberts, 2; G. A. Wilkes, 3. R. V- Logie also started. Hegglin got away at the jump, 'but Roberts forged ahead, and held pride of place to about ten yards from, home, where Hegglin came again, and won. Neatest Header; trophies valued at 15s and 7s Gd l . —G. P. Blacklock, 1; F. Innes, 2; G. C. Johnson, 3. Ladies’ Bracelet. Rowing Club’s Race; trophy valued at £1 Is. —Ethelbright, 1; Player, 2 ; Bethune, 3. Anniversary Handicap. First prize, trophy valued! at £2 2s; second, trophy valued at £1 Is. First prize—P. Duilio, 3sec, 1; J. Levinsohn, 4sec, 2 ; W. J. Bannehr, 6sec, 3. Second heiat— B. O. Johnson, 4sec, 1; E. T. Hegglin, scr, 2; F. Roberts, scr, 3. Final heat— F. Gardner, 3sec, 1; D. McCulloch, 2sec, 2. Final—Duilio, 1; Hegglin, 2 ; J'ohnson, 3. Won fairly easily. Second and third a close finish. Time 35 2-ssec. The tub race and greasy pole competition were each won by E. F. Richardson, the Boys’ Race by C. Freyberg, and the Consolation Race by Levinsohn. The officials for the day were as follows : —Judges, Messrs H. Birch, T. Evans, T. Shields; starter, Mr E. J.
