The Auckland Herald says: —ln connection with Mr Commissioner Tunbridge’s inspection of the police, we may say that although the men had no personal complaint it is understood that they have three grievances as affecting the organisation, coming under the head of pay, uniform and house allowance, which cause a good deal of dissatisfaction. The men who joined the force three years ago get £lO 17s a month as third-class constables, whereas all joining now get only ,£lO a month, in the same grade and doing exactly the same duty. It is regarded also as a grievance that the police have to pay for their uniform, contrary to the usage in other colonies, while the railway service, post service, and gaol-warders get them provided. The third grievance is non-allow-ance of house rent to the married privates, while the non-commissioned officers, with much higher pay, are also given a house allowance of ten shillings a week, and the gaol-warders are given house allowance when Government quarters are not provided. These are anomalies which the men regard as having no justification, and in consequence there is always chronic dissatisfaction %immering among those affected by the-ie regulations. The committee of the Zeehan (Tasmania) School of Mines has taken up the matter of sending a collection of minerals to the Otago Jubiles Exhibition. At the last meeting of the Napier Chamber of Commerce amotion was passed, “Thatthe General Manager of Railways be requested to . . . proceed as quickly as possible with the construction of trucks for the conveyance of fish.” As a matter of fact, insulated trucks for the carriage of fish have been running on the Napier-Wellington section for several weeks past, in accordance with a promise made by the Minister of Railways to a Napier acme tima ago.
