SWIMMING.

STAR BOATING CLUB’S SWIMMING SPOUTS. Favoured by delightful weather the annual swimming sports of the fetar Boating Club took place on Saturday afternoon. An exceptionally large number of ladies and friends of members were present, and for these afternoon tea was supplied in the social room of the boat house. |The president of the club (Mr E. Pearce) was present during the afternoon, and the committee under whose superintendence the sports were hold consisted of Messrs G. H. Bethune (captain;, C. Pearce (deputy-captain), W. H. Morrah, N. Galbraith, C. B. Trimnell, A. W. Newton, W. I). Horne, R. Pownall and J. R. Morrison. The captain, deputy-captain and Mr A. W. Newton acted as judges ; Mr N. Galbraith as starter, and Mr J. R. Morrison as hon. secretary. During the afternoon Mr J. Kwan .*• mitb, an expert angler, gave an exhibition ot angling. Mr G. Hutchison, who represented the fish, was, however, too strong for the line, and proved victorious. The swimming of Mr A. Duncan in the championship event was admirable, while many other members showed great improvement on last season’s form, this being no doubt due to the greater facilities that are now placed in the way of swimmers. The various events resulted a 3 follows: Coxswains’ Race, 50yds.—M. Litchfield, 20sec, 1; P. Pye-Smith, 20seo, 2 ; M. Curtis, 12sec, 3. Won somewhat easily. Maiden Viace, 100yds.—S. Hume, 1; R. Pownall, 2 ; D. Menzies, 3. ; Won by e two yards. Club Championship, 200ydsi—A, Duncan, 1; G. Hutchinson, 2. These were the only starters. A good race resulted for the greater part of the distance, the two swimming side by side, Duncan with a side stroke and Hutchinson with a powerful over-arm stroke, and it was only, in the last 75yds that Duncan began to draw ahead, eventually winning by 10yds. Cigar and Umbrella BaCe.—G. Hutchinson, 1; S. Hume, 2. Greasy Boom.—This caused considerable amaseinent, and was eventually web by F; G. Hume,, who siicceeded in rebelling the flag twice. Ahather competitor, 1 W. A. Gray, also managed to remove the flag, but as he did cot do so with his hands it Was not counted by the judges. At the request of a nuihber of members the committee of the Star Boating Club has placed On the list of club races two additional events, a Sculling Handicap for firstclass oarsmen, and a similar race for secondclass oarsmen, both of which will be commenced on Saturday afternoon, the 26'h instant. Entries will close at the club-house on Thursday, the 24th, at 530 p.m, Already a number of members have placed their names down as competitors for the events. The Fitzgerald Fours of the Star Boating Club will be rowed on Saturday next, wh3n all the heats wiil be decided, Christchurch, February 7. At a special meeting of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association to - bight, the following resolutions were carried \— 1. “That the delegates of the associated swimming clubs, sitting as the General Council of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association,notice with extreme regret that an Association has been formed in Auckland, and registered under the Unclassified Societies Act, 1895, as the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association (registered), and declares that no body other than the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association has the right to use the name of the New Zealand Amateur S wimming Association, and hereby notify to the Registrar of Friendly Societies that the name assumed by the Auckland Association is likely to cause a mistaken impression in the minds of the public: as to its identification and desire him to cancel the license granted to the recently formed Association in Auckland.” 2. “That the secretary be instructed to send a circular to each of the affiliated clubs and bodies interested, pointing out the whole position of the Association with regard to the socalled Association in Auckland, and calling upon these clubs to stand by this Association, and drawing attention to the conciliatory tone this body had adopted in treating with the Auckland Club with regard to its supposed grievance.” Auckland, February 3.

At a meeting of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association it was resolved ‘That the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association be registered.” Instructions were given to the registrar to notify the swimming clubs throughout the colony of the legal status of the Association, and ask for nominations for representatives of the Association in the different centres. It was also decided to communicate with the Minister of Education with reference to securing subsidies for instruction in the art of swimming and setting apart a bathing reserve. The Minister of Education is bring communicated with by the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association Of Auckland in reference to the necessity for adequate provision for bathing reserves, and _ for _ subsidies for instruction in the art of swimming.
