THE WELLINGTON SEAT.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—l read in this morning’s paper the information of the retirement of Sir Robert Stout from the representation as one of the members for the city. At this time it is not my intention to enquire into the cause demanding the retirement of Sir R. Stout. What I desire to urge is that ‘ the supporters of the Government should

unite as one man that they should stand shoulder to'sboulder, and present a front which will spell "unanimity/’ "victory." It is to be remembered that the Opposition will fight and will put their best foot foremost. But let us also remember the last by-election in this city, when Mr McLean stood in the breach and slew the Opposition’s Goliath, Mr Bell. Let a committee be at once formed. Not a large one, but let it be a representative one, and let the general body loyally abide by the decision of the committee. We must have no dissensions; but we must have a strong man, one whose utterances show ; careful thought, and will carry weight with friends and foes alike. We want no stripling of the Le Grove type. We want a man of ripe experience whom his party honours and the Opposition ' respects. Let" the electors remember how' the present Government has served the colony during the past seven years and return a man who will be a material support to the Government and whose vote can be counted on in any emergency. But there, I do 'not wish to enter into the merits of for and against. During the election I will avail myself of that opportunity which your courtesy always affords. —I am, &c., A.J. Wellington, February 3rd, 1898.
