PUBLIC WORKS COMMITTEE.
A meeting of the Public Works Committee of the City Council was held last Monday ; present —His Worship the Mayor (Mr j. R. Blair), Councillors McGill, Eraser, Devine, Smith, Higginbottom, Lindsay, Lingard, Myers, Willeston and Eraser. A deputation from the Melrose Borough Council waited on the committee and asked for a contribution towards the maintenance of the Evans’ Bay road, similar to those which had been granted on four previous occasions. Councillor Devine moved that a grant of <£4o be made. Councillor Lingard moved that £25 be granted. The motion was carried by 7 votes to 4 : Ayes —Councillors Anderson, Lingard, Willeston, Higginbottom, Devine, Fraser, Smith. Noes—The Mayor, and Councillors Myers, Lindsay and McGill. Messrs Watson and Jaokson waited on the committee to complain that a water-pipe in Owen street was causing water to flow on to their land. It was decided to submit the matter to the City Solicitor for an opinion. It was decided to recommend that Messrs Brandon and Hislop’s application for a permit for a right-of-way at Chew’s lane be acceded to; also those of Mr E. H. Beere for rights-of-way at Roxburgh street and Oriental
terrace (providing certain specifications are complied with). It was resolved to recommend that a piece of land at the corner of Cuba and Victoria streets, inadvertently taken by the Council to make a footpath, be purchased if it can be acquired at a reasonable cost. Mr Bohan’s claim for damage done by water to his goods was not sustained. It was decided to recommend that Mr W. H. Young’s Karori ’buses be allowed to stand in the vicinity of the Martin fountain during certain hours of the day to the approval of the traffic inspector. It was resolved to recommend that Mrs O’Meara (whose husband, was killed in the drainage works) be granted £2O. A communication was received from the Rimutaka Deviation Committee, and it was decided to recommend that a letter be sent to the committee stating that the project hasithe Council’s moral support. It was decided to recommend that the Garrison Band be allowed to give a concert on the Basin Reserve next Sunday, and take up a collection in aid of the sufferers by the bush fires; and that Jupp’s Band be permitted to give a concert on the Basin Reserve on the following Sunday in aid of Mrs Russo and five children. In reference to an application by Mr H. H. Lahmann that he be not required to find a surety for the carrying out of certain works in connection with alterations to his hotel, it was decided that he will not be required to find such surety if he deposits £IOO until the work is carried out. It was decided to recommend that the women’s hours at the Thorndon baths be extended from 4 to 5 o’clock on Fridays. Mr S. Brown, chairman of the Wellington Industrial Association, who was the only candidate nominated, has been appointed to the vacant seat on the Wellington Conciliation Board.
