CITY IMPROVEMENTS.
The lower part of Cuba street immediately abutting on the Te Aro reclamation is rapidly becoming a scene of considerable business activity. Solid brick buildings, which are being erected on either side to the order of several local firms, form a substantial evidence of the growing prosperity of the city. Adjoining the Bank of New Zealand’s premises, and having a frontage to Cuba street extension of 34ft, a handsome brick structure has jtost been erected for Mr T. G. Macarthy, the well-known commercial man of this city. The building, which is of two stories, has been constructed for trade purposes, and the height from floor to ceiling is 14ft on the ground floor and lift on the top floor. Extending almost the whole frontage to the, street, is a spacious shop, having large plate-glass windows on either side of the entrance. At the rear of the shop the building has been designed to include the usual offices and living rooms, fitted up with all improved modern conveniences. A side-door from Cuba street gives access to a well-constructed staircase, which connects the ground floor with the upper portion of the building. The top floor covers an area of 1900 superficial feet; it is entirely undivided, and can be used either in connection with the shop or as a social hall, for which latter purpose it is admirably suited. The premises are lighted throughout with electricity. The architect, Mr Jas. O’Dea, of thin city, is to be complimented on the appearance of the building, the elevation of which, with its handsome mullioned windows, panelled pilasters, cornices, pedijnent and general detail, gives a fresh
assurance that a capable architect can erect substantial buildings satisfactory alike to his employer and to the increased importance of the town. The builders, Messrs W. and C. Johnson, are completing their work with the erection of a verandah, which will extend the whole width of the building, and will be in general keeping with the design.
