The Castoms and excise duties collected at the several ports of New Zealand during the quarter ended December 31et amounted to .£492,550, as against <£464,331 for the corresponding quarter of 1896. The duties for the year 1897 in Wellington amounted to £437,898, as against £385,933 for the year 1896. As one result of the floods in the Hawke’s Bay district last Easter, the Railway Department found it necessary to make a deviation of the Wellington-Napier line near Olive, portion of the old line having'-been washed away. For the purposes of this deviation, portions of the Ngatarawa block at Here* taunga were taken, by the Government under the Public Works Act. The land thus acquired is defined in this week’s Gazette. We are informed that a meeting is to ba held at Carterton shortly to discuss thQ Rimutaka railway deviation question,
