CARPENTERS’ PICNIC.

The first picnic of the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners was held at Day’s Bay on Saturday under very favourable circumstances The steamer Duchess left the Ferry Wharf at 10.30 a m. and 2.30 p.m., under command of Captain Jones. She took over about 1100 persons. The Duoo assisted to bring the picnickers back. Mills and Co.'s trophy, J. Dawson. 150yds Race —First prize, Messrs Wilkins and Field’s trophy, W. Brad;n-i2nd, Mr F «lkner’s trophy, Schoniberg; 3rd,H,Herron. 120yds Race -First prize, Messrs J. Ladies’ Baoe First prize, Te Aro House trophy, Mrs Bradsley; 2nd, Mr T, J. Thomson’s trophy, Mrs Brown ; 3rd, Messrs Veiteh and Allan’s trophy, Miss M. Hollister.. A tug -of - war between married and single men was won by the married team Messrs Waddell, McLeod and Weir, Booth and Prouse each gave a guinea, and this, with an additional £3 12s, was devoted to-prizes for the children Members of the Garrison Band, under Mr King’s conductorship, performed appropriate music on the green and also in the pavilion. Both floor and turf were freely used for dancing. Rounders, rings, games, &c , were heartily entered into, and when the boats left everyone seemed sorry that so cheerful an outing had ended so quickly. Great credit is due to the treasurer (Mr H. Hatchard) and the secretary (Mr H. Franklin) for the sucpess of the picnifl. As to the weather, the day h e S an gloriously, and though early in the afternoon there were signs of southerly weather, and a oold wind sprang up, no rain fell, and the wind died away again, leaving the harbour perfectly calm and the air mild.
