At the Stipendiary Magistrate's Court to-day two men named James Levy and Martin Webster were charged with stealing a totalisator ticket, valued £9 2s, from Robert McAllister on the racecourse yesterday. Accused were committed for trial.
For the criminal sessions of the Supreme Court which open on Monday there are ten charges against seven persons ; seven of them burglary. Invercaegill, November 10.
David Barton, aged 40, has been absent from his hut, between Cromarty and Wilson's River, since the 31st ult., and fears are entertained for his safety. Foxton, November 10.
The principal storekeepers, fiaxmiller3 and settlers in this district have liberally responded to the subscription list in circulation here for the purpose of assisting in the immediate appointment of Mr John Holmes, merchant, of Wellington, as the Colony's expert already chosen by the flaxmillers, traders and merchants, to investigate and report upon the fibre markets of Europe, America and other countries. Dunedin, November 10.
Three summonses in connection with the liquidation of Walter Guthrie and Company were called on at the Supreme Court to-day. It was stated that the matter of the appointment of a provisional liquidator had been practically arranged. The Bank of New Zealand proposed Mr W. R. Cook, and the other side had consented, subject to Mr Guthrie being at libertyJ;o propose a reputable co-liquidator. There was no objection to the bank bringing an action to enforce the deed.
Nelson, November 9.
The death is announced of three very old settlers, namely, Mr W. Gibbs, formerly M.H.R. for Collingwood, aged 77; Mrs W. Bettany, of the same age ; and Mr Touett, who was one of the Taranaki early settlers who took refuge here.
