Mr Spencer George Smith, of DuUedin, has been added to the list of Justices of the Peace of the Colony.

Mr Cave; formerly Chief steward of tho Tekapo, came tip from South last week to join the Corinna.-

Mr H. S. Fish, ex-M.H.R. for Dunedin, returned from his trip to the Old Country by the Tongariro.

The Otago University Council has awarded the StUart prize for physics to S. Brugh, and the Macandrew scholarship to A. G. Miller.

Mr T. Humphries, Commissioner of Crown Lauds in Hawke's Bay, succeeds Mr Tirowning (resigned) as Commissioner at Nelson.

Mr James Taylor, who loft Wairoa (Hawke's Bay) some time ago to enter on a course of study to fit him for the Catholic priesthood, is at present studying at a seminary in Turin, in tho north of Italy.

Mr F. H. Fraser, of Wellington, has accepted the position of vice-president of the Public Libraries Association of Australasia. Tho Association intends holding a convention of representatives in Sydney in a few months' time.

Mr A. Greenfield, S.M. afc Nelson, who was expected to arrive here this week to relieve Mr Wardcll, has written that his departure from the South has boon delayed, and that he will not be able to take up bis dutios on the day originally fixed.

Mr Geo. Wilson, Mining Instructor at the Thames, has been . appointed Inspecting Engineer to tho Mines Department, vice Mr H. A. Gordon, who resigned the office to take up a position under the Anglo-Continental syndicate. The appointment is temporary.

Among the passengers by the Tongariro last week was the Kight Kev J. Gallagher, Roman Catholic Bishop of Goulbourn. He joined the steamer at Hobart, and has come to this Colony to assist in the consecration of the Rev Dr Lenihan as Bishop of the Auckland diocese.

Mr Martin Kennedy, accompanied by Mrs Kennedy, arrived in Auckland by the Mariposa, and will remain in that city for a week. We are glad to learn that Mr and Mrs Kennedy are both in good health, though their sad bereavement while in tho Old Country was to them a trying experience. Tho friends of Mr and Mrs Kennedy will be pleased to welcome them home to Wellington noxt week.

MrW. G. Walker, an old resident of Christchurch, died at Auckland on Monday as he was returning home from Sydney, where he had been on sick leave. Mr Walker was for some years head clerk in the Magistrate's Court at Christchurch. Ho was the father of coursing in Canterbury, and was one of tho first to import high-class greyhounds into the province. He also acted as the first editor of the Coursing Calender. In poultry and pigeon flying Mr Walker was an enthusiast.

Captain Bate, commander of the Zealandia, at present in Wellington, originally came from Clovelly, in Barnstaple Bay, and has in his possession views of the locality, including one of the cottage in which Charles Kingsley wrote most of his " Westward Ho." There is a spot called "Westward Ho" about eight miles across the bay. Captain Bate went to school with Hodge and Cruse, two of the characters pictured in the book. Both are alive, Hodge being ship's husband at Corey and Co.'s, Cardiff, whilo Cruse is owner of a small fishing vessel, which also carries coal when cargo offers.

Lord Balfour of Burleigh has been elected Rector of the Edinburgh University.

Mr Justice Edwards Was among the passengers who left by the Mawhera on Monday for Pictonj Nelson and West Coast.

The Very Rev Father Devoy had intended to be present at the consecration of Dr Lenihan in Auckland next Sunday, but he HOW finds that he will be unable to attend.

Mr E. W. Smyth, for many years with the Commercial Union Assiirance Company, has been appointed managing clerk for the Australian Alliance Assurance Company, of which Mr A. E. Kernot is district agent.

When H.M.S. Lizard was at Oamaru the other day one of the oldest citizens of that town was specially invited On board by the doctor, and was mOst cordially received by the officers of the man-o'-war in consequence of his naval connections. The' citizen in question, says the Mail, was Mr E. G. I ano. whoso father was an officer in the Koyal Navy, and fought under .Nelson. Mr Lane took his father's medals and commission, signed by George 111., on board, and was made a great deal of by the officers of the Lizard, who said that they had seldom met, outside of the tervice, ono whose father had served under England's greatest naval hero.
