HOW DO YOU ACCOUNT FOR IT ?

TO THE EDITOR. Sib, —It must be exceedingly gratifying to the friends of Liberalism to note the manner in which the whole country is rousing up to the support of the Government. Enthusiastic votes of thanks and confidence in Ministers and their supporters seem to be the order of the day, whilsc the friends of the Opposition appear to regard themselves as extremely lucky if they have cold thanks accorded. In any country the voice of the capital is potent in affecting public feeling, and the chilling freeze with which a great meeting received Sir Robert Stout in the Wellington Opera House has no doubt very largely influenced the minds of electors throughout New Zealand. What I cannot understand is how the electors of Wellington Suburbs constituency appear to belong to different political flesh and blood from their fellowmen and women in other parts of the country ? How is it that the Opposition candidate for Wellington Suburbs gets " confidence " when others of his " colour " can't get it elsewhere ? Is it because the electors of Wellington Suburbs are more wise or more stupid than other electors ? Have they local axes to grind, or do they reside so much in the clouds that their blood is thin and cold, and they are incapable of being moved to any generous enthusiasm ? The position of the electors who vote confidence in Mr Opposition Hislop seems much to me like that of the juryman who thought his eleven colleagues just so many fools. Perhaps, sir, you can throw some light on this ticklish subject. —I am, &c., Fitz.
