The inference drawn from M. Kanotaux's speech is that the Powers, as a last resort, will combine to depose the Sultan. Speaking in the French Senate, M. The Legislative Council of Now South Wales negatived the motion for the first reading of the Referendum Bill by 30 votes to 9, on the ground that it would interfere with the privileges of the Chamber. The president's ruling was that the Bill would alter the constitution of the Council, and all Bills affecting either House must be introduced by the Chamber immediately affected by them. It is understood that the Victorian Government intends to abandon the State Bank and Credit Foncier Bill.

The Earl of Portman has been awarded .£26,000 as compensation for the land at Marylebone required as the terminus for the Manchester-London Railway. Dr Wynne, who is investigating the Queensland tick plague, has discovered a simple and inexpensive method of protecting cattle from infection, but it has not yet been proved whether the protection is lasting or only temporary. A meeting of carpenters at Adelaide decided on a general strike on Monday unless the employers raise the rate of wages from 8s to 9s per day. The employers have expressed a willingness to pay Ss 6d after Ist December, but they are determined to resist a further advance.
The marriage of the Due d'Orleans, head of the French Royalists, and Arch-Duchess Maria, daughter of Archduke Joseph of Austria, was celebrated at the Imperial Palace, Vienna, on Friday. Among those present were the Emperor Francis of Austria, the Duke of Connaught and the Queen of Portugal. The Convocation of the Anglican Province of Canterbury, after a conference with laymen, resolved to ask the Chancellor of tho Exchequer to grant Gs per child in all the elementary schools, and also to strike a rate in aid of schools, not to jexood the amount of voluntary contributions.
