CHRISTIAN ENDEAVOUR CONVENTION.
The Christian Eadeavourers continued fheir meetings on the 7th. They began early—at 7 a.m.--with a sunrise prayer meeting in the Baptist school hall, Vivian street, with the Rev C. Dallaston as leader. At St. John’s Church in the afternoon a devotional meeting was held, President Elliott in the chair. Two papers were read —one on “ Bible Study” by President Erwin, and the other by the Rev W. Baumber, entitled “ How to Conduct the Consecration Meeting.” A junior rally followed, Mr H. W. Kersley lecturing to the children on the subject “ The Christian Soldier.” In the evening St. John’s Church was crowded, when a sermon was delivered by the president, Rev Gray, the subject being “Soul Winning.” A collection was taken up in aid of the funds of the Union.
Bishop Wallis, in his Synod address last week, acknowledged with gratitude .£6O from Mrs Rhodes, of Wellington, for the completion of the purchase of the land on which Wadestown churcliroom stands. Also, a church site at Eketahuna from Mr C. T. Williams, and a site for a Sunday school at Sanson from Mr James Harris. The Vestries of St. Paul’s and St. Mark’s Churches have voted .£3O each per annum for the purpose of providing a chaplain for the Hospital and other institutions. Last week at the Diocesan Synod it was decided “that the Wellington Diocesan Board of Trustees be instructed to apply the interest accruing from the sum of .£6OO in their hands derived from the Wellington Cemetery to a fund for providing a chaplain for the Wellington Hospital and- certain other public institutions, provided that at least .£l5O a year for the same purpose be raised from other sources.” The Anglican Quinquennial Synod, sitting at Sydney, has resolved that the title of Archbishop be conferred on all metropolitans of ecclesiastical provinces in Australia and Tasmania. At pyesent New South Wales is the only existing province, and its Primate, the Right Rev Dr Saumarez Smith, becomes the first Archbishop. The resolution, however, will not take effect till after recognition of the title by the L-unbeth Conference. At a meeting of the Cathedral Fund Committee on Thursday there were present : His Lordship Bishop Wallis (chairman), Archdeacons Fancourt and Towgood, the Revs Hunt and Russell, and Messrs Ashcroft, Tolhurst, Whitall, Powles, Quick, Wilberfoss, Stace, Jamegon, Martin, Wheeler, Mowbray, J. Brown, Fitz Gerald, R. Brown and Captain Hewitt. There was considerable discussion of a conversational character relative to the proposed cathedral, a number of details being arranged. It was stated that the exact amount promised was £4197 3s Id, of which £2772 7s 2d had been received. It wa3 arranged that the next meeting be a general meeting of the committee and the ladies’ committee, on a day to be fixed by the Bishop.
