CHPJSTCIIUECH PRODUCE MARKET

Christchurch, April 29

During the week a fair business lias been passing in wheat at quotations for millers' purposes. Tho rise in the price of oats in the South has had the effect of still further hardening tho markot here. No _ sales of magnitude have been reported. A fair amount of oatshoaf chaff has been sold at up to 40s for good, bright lines. Onions have hardened, and potatoes weakened. Willi tho exception of onions (X'7 10s) quotations remain as tolographed last week. COLONIAL DAIRY PRODUCE IN ENGLAND. Messrs W. Weddol and Co. report under date 20th March : Butter.—The demand for colonial butter has been somewhat slower than last week, though a fair amount of business has been done considering the small quantity of butter on the markot. Had there been the samo quantity as last season prices must have fallen enormously; as it is values are 18s to 20s above the corresponding week of last year, while Danish and Swedish are only 5s to 10s higher. There is no chango in prices from last week for choicest colonial brands, which are becoming very scarco ; indeed, tho quality of none of them, even the best butters, is equal to what it was two months since, and, therefore, very choice parcels mako good prices. Odd lots have reached 102 s to 101 s this week, but this is qui to exceptional, and 90s to 100 s is tho average for choicest, and 90s to 94s for best factory. Pastry butters are sidling at far above their relative value, and may be quoted at 80s to 80s. Last year at this time those inferior butters were making only 50s to fi-i.s. The quantity of colonial butter competing with (Scandinavian is now too small to piny an effective opposition, and it would have been wiser for the Danes to have maintained last week's quotations, as the result of the present drop cannot withdraw the trade from Australian and New Zealand butters, and will only have the effect of weakening tho market. It is exceedingly doubtful if it will reduce tho price of colonial, thoiuh very probably that is what they expect to do. Cheese.—New Zealand is selling fairly well at 3Cs to His for coloured, and 41s for white. The quantity afloat from the Colony is Tongariro 218 cwL, Buteshire 3S2S and the Mamari 1113, which cannot be considered largo.
