WATER SUPPLY ON HIGH LEVELS.

Tho City Council had under consideration list woek the report of tho City Ihiginoor on tho supply of water to the high levels The three -net-hods suggested in tho report for coping with the difficulty were as under •.

1. By the construction of storage reservoirs on the hills above those levels. 2. By entirely separating tho reticulation upon the various liig-h-levol areas from that of the rest of the city, above, say, the lTOft level, and giving them each a distinct service from tho Karori reservoir, which could bo set aside for the purpose. Tho cost of carrying out this second method Mr Wiltshire estimates at ,£(5200. :i. By laying a 2tin main direct from the Wainui reservoir (and at a lower level than the present nutlet to race) to end of tunnel, and a 2liu main theneo into the city at Martin's Fountain, and increasing tho sizo of some of the principal distributing mains (by which tho pressure would be increased in tho day time as high or higher than it now stands during the night time), thus, by having both quantify and pressure, the highest levels would have an uninterrupted supply (casualties excepted). This work would cost =£35,000. Councillor Dovino moved, "That effect be given to tho City Engineer's report with reference to giving a distinct service, to tho various high water levels, from the Karori reservoir."

Alter a long discussion, the Mayor proposed, as an addition to Councillor L)evino's motion, that tho cost of carrying out the work of bringing the water from Karori be charged to the overdraft. This addition was carried, and Councillor Dovino's motion, with the addition, was then put, and was carried on the casting vote of tho Mayor. The Mayor moved, " That the water rate he as uiider value of laud and buildings to which water is supplied ; (to -. per cent, on ratable value of all land:- and buildings to which water can bebut is not supplied." The motion was agreed to.
