THE FIRE TARIFF.

The representatives of the Fire Underwriters’ Association have been sitting in conference in Wellington for the last 10 days. Amongst other subjects they have had the fire tariffs under revision, and on Tuesday a resolution was passed—“ That between this date and the date on which the revised tariffs are brought into operation the rates of the now current tariff are to be charged, subject to the provision that a refund may be made in cases where the new rate proves lower than the old.” These refunds, however, are not to be retrospective. It was stated at the meeting that the losses to companies by fires in New Zealand during 1895 exceeded <£220,000.
