A CASE IMPORTANT TO UNIONS.
A case which is of considerable importance to unions" and is probably the first of the kind heard in the Colony, came before Mr Martin, S. M., on Tuesday, when the Wellington Carriers' Union sued Jay Porter for £L ss, subscriptions alleged to be due by him as a member of the Union. Mr Wilford, who appeared for the Union, said it was registered under the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act of 1891, and was accordingly a body corporate, and the members were bound by its rules. One of those rules provided for tho payment of subscriptions, and he contended that in view of the fact of its incorporation the Union had power to sue members for arrears. Mr Skerrett, for the defence, urged that Porter was not a member, as ho had not paid the entrance fee. Mr Martin said that a-; the case a ft" jcted all the unions in the Colony he would tako time to consider his decision.
