Auckland, January 20. The Lands Department has at last decided to take action to secure tho absolute possession of the Little Barrier Island (some time ago reserved foe the preservation of native flora and fauna). The steamer Nautilus is to take a detachment of 13 of the Permanent Force, besides constables and some bailiffs, to enforce the judgment of the Court in tho case against Tenetahi by evicting that chief and his followers. Mr E. T. Gillon, who is a passenger by the Waihora, is in a somewhat precarious state of health. He underwent an operation in Sydney, but it was only partly successful. Woodville, January 20. Before Mr Stanford, S.M., on Friday, the licensee of the Commercial Hotel was fined £5 and costs, and his license endorsed, for Sunday trading. Napier, January 20. A man named Woolley, who escaped from the Wellington Lunatic Asylum, was recaptured at Waipawa on Saturday afternoon. Dunedin, January 20. John Hally, 65, a stonemason’s labourer, died suddenly while at work to-day from failure of the heart’s action.
