EDUCATIONAL.
The Dunedin Education Board elected Mr Richardson, Rector of the Balelutha High School, and Mr Bossence, first assistant ot the Port Chalmers School, as Assistant inspectors of Schools. • At a meeting of the Dunedin Board it was proposed, “That a supply of the Colonial Reader ’ be obtained for the use o„ pupils m standards V. and VI., .and that thesame be issued to the schools under this Board s jurisdiction.” An amendment w-as earned that head teachers be informed that the. Board will supply the “ Reader ” at cost price, to be used as a supplementary reader in standards V. and VI. At the end of last year there were (104 schools in the Wellington Educational district, of which 16 are aided or subsidised schools. There were 312 teachers in the service of the Board, 232 female and 110 male, made np as follows Heads of schools, 58- sole teacher, 35; assistants, 83; pupil teachers, 157. The children attending the schools numbered 13,018 —6778 male and 62-70 female, and they were classified as follows : Class preparatory, 3373; btandard 1., 1607; Standard 11., 1661; Standard 111., 1887; Standard... IV., 1762; Standard V., 1359; Standard VT/p* -57.3; Standard VII., 526. They were all receiving instruction m reading, writing and arithmetic, /010 in English grammar and compositiom (3684? males and 3326 females), 8214 in geography (4221 males and 4023 females), 6810 in history, (3602 males and 3208 females). 5133 in elementary science (2795 males* and 2039 females), 12,785 in drawing (6573 males ana 6212 females), 9113 in object lessons (4659 males and 4454 females), 12,327 vocal music (6HO males and 5917 females), needlework (5475 females and 211 males), 705 in domestic economy (677 females and 28 males).
