A CHILDREN’S OUTING.

A large number of ladies attended a meeting called by the Mayor (Mr C. M. Luke) on Tuesday afternoon for the purpose of organising a pleasant day’s outing for the poorer children of the city on the Queen’s Birthday. The Mayor presided, and read letters of apology at being unable to be present from Sir Robert Stout, Councillor Myers, Mrs Bannister, and Rev W. C. Waters, the latter of whom enclosed a donation of £1 towards the object for which the meeting was called. The proposal was taken up with great enthusiasm by those present, and a committee was set up to visit the -whole of the city, which was divided into districts for the purpose, one district being allotted to two members of the committee, and by that means it was thought they would be able to ascertain those children who should be invited.

A committee of 10 was also set up to canvass the city for subscriptions, and another committee was appointed to take charge of the sports and games. It was decided that in the event of the day being -wet, the Mount Cook Drillshed should be engaged. Captain Davis, of the Boys’ Brigade, volunteered his services for the occasion, and they were accepted with thanks. Tne Mayor gave a donation of £2 to the fund. Mrs Hislop was appointed honorary secretary, and Mrs Dr Chappie honorary treasurer. It was decided that a meeting of the committee appointed to find out which children should be invited should be held on Thursday, when ministers of all denominations are invited to attend. The meeting concluded with a vote of thanks to the chairman.
