THE TICHBORNE CASE.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —With reference to the telegrams I have noticed in your columns as to another claimant coming forward for the Tichborne estates, it may be of some interest to your readers if I state some of my own personal knowledge as to the matter. As many are aware I have not only spent many yeax's in New Zealand, but also many in Australia. In the year 1879 I went to England as an agent for the New Zealand Government Immigration Department, and while in London I stayed at the Queen’s Hotel, St. Martin’s le Grand, owned by Mr Quartermaine East, who at that time was taking a great interest in the Tichborne case, in fact had been one of the chief supporters of the then Tichborne claimant, and was then a firm believer that the person then undergoing a term of imprisonment for perjui’y was none other than the real Sir Doger. By this means I was brought into contact with several other prominent supporters of the claimant, among them Lord Divers and Mr Guilford Onslow, and as I made known to them that in 1857 I kept a slaughteryard at Brown’s Diggings, 17 miles from Ballarat, they were anxious to hear what more I knew of the matter, and as it now bears on the claim set up by Cress well, I will here repeat it. In 1857, at Brown’s Diggings, I had a man working for me who was called Arthur Orton. He was a splendid butcher but I was compelled to discharge him through his fondness for the flowing bowl. He was certainly a Cockney. Six months after he left me I met him again in the company of a man called Tom Castro. In 1859 I met Orton and Castro again in Castlemaine. In 1861 I again met Orton when I was shipping horses to New Zealand, and he pressed me very hard then to take him into my employment. Upon my stating these facts Lord Divers wished me to visit the claimnant, and his lordship obtained for me a permit to see him (the claimant) from the then Home Secretary (Mr D. A. Cross). There accompanied me to the Eortsea prison Lord Divers, Mr Guilford Onslow, Dr Kenealey, Mr Quatermaine East, Captain Morrison, Mr J. Helsby, Mr Skipworth, Mr G. B. Moi'rison and others. Arrived at the prison I of course expected to see Arthur Orton, but the man there

detained was none other than tho Tom Castro who had been in the company of Arthur Orton in Australia. Castro appeared glad to see me, and though I recognised him immediately he did not at first recognise me. After, however, a slight reminder, Castro mentioned several things that to my knowledge happened while he was with Orton ac the times I have mentioned. I told him that when I knew him in Australia he did not say that lie was Sir Roger Tichborne, and that he had not told me he had any claim on the estates, but that 1 was convinced that he was not Arthur Orton, and after we left the prison I made known through the English press that the man was, I considered, wrongfully convicted with reference to the count that he had falsely sworn he was not Arthur Orton, and I have the temerity to hope that my evidence, which was taken on his behalf and laid before the Home Secretary, assisted'in a great measure to reduce his term of imprisonment. In the year 1883 I was in Sydney (N.S.W.) and very curiously I met two persons at Exford’s Hotel who claimed to be the brothers of Arthur Orton, and they wished me to accompany them to the Parramatta asylum, where they stated a man was detained under the name of William Cresswell, who they believed was their brother. I accordingly accompanied them to the asylum, and I immediately identified the man who was called Cresswell as the person I had known as Arthur Orton, the butcher ; and the brothers also claimed him as their brother. I hold in my possession prints from a Sydney newspaper of the three brothers which were published at the time. The man Cresswell had a half circular scar on his cheek exactly the same as one Arthur Orton had. I do not claim to say whether Tom Castro was a Tichborne, but I think I have clearly shown'that there were two persons representing Arthur Orton and Tom Castro, and not one as the prosecution endeavoured to make out when Castro was found guilty. As to the paragraphs with reference to Jean Luie’s evidence which have recently appeared, I should think after his former experience in this matter it would be well if he sang small, as it will be a,big effort to get any 12 British jurymen to take in what ho may-say with tho splendid character as to truth telling which he now bears.—l am, &c.,
