SMOKE.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —Will anybody kindly explain a few obscure passages in the letter signed “ A Parent,” New Zealand Times of ,the 7tli inst.: —l. Why is the gift of a pipe by schoolboys to their master an impropriety ? 2. Why is the master accused of the impropriety ? 3. Why should he be censured by the Minister of Education ? 4. Why should a teacher be without suspicion, like Caesar’s wife, and why was Caesar’s wife never suspicious ? 5. Why should a scholar in England not be expelled if, after being warned, he persists in smoking ? 6. If gifts of pipes and pouches by pupils to their teachers are likely to become popular, why will outsiders talk Latin when they criticise our educational system ? 7. Why —if one editor is not of the opinion that these presentations appear to be popular — is it held that one swallow does-not make a summer ?—I am, &c., G. Hirsch. Palmerston North, January 7, 1895.
