YACHTING.

The second annual race for the Downes Challenge Cup was ’sailed on Saturday afternoon under the auspices of the Port Nicholson Yacht Club. The following boats started : : —Maritana, scr; Rona llsec; Mahina, 19sec; Mapu, 22sec; Jennie Reid, 40sec. The first-class course was sailed. When off Somes Island the Maritana, which was leading, carried away the shackle of her bobstay, which practically put ber out of : the race. The Rona, which held a good position, finished first, but Mr A H; Turnbull subsequently announced his intention of withdrawing from the contest, as he had not entered his boat until the Saturday morning, instead of on Friday night, the proper time for the closing of entries. The trophy therefore goes to the Mapu, which came in second ; but Mr Turnbull wins the burgee given by the Club for. the first-class handicap race, which was sailed in conjunction with the race for the cup. This race commenced at 2.30 p.m., and ' the times of finishing were as follow: Rona, 5h 47min ; Maritana, 5h 49min 24sec; Mapu, 6h 3min 35sec ; Mahina, 6h I4min. 53sec. The Rona therefore wins from the Mapu on her time allowance by 6mi n 35sec. The yacht which has been built at Auckland for a Wellington syndicate was launched on Saturday. She will arrive in Wellington at the beginning of the New Year,
