-Peatheeston, December 7. . On - Wednesday evening the usual monthly meeting of the School Committee was held. Present —Messrs J. G. Cox (chairman), W. Pry, W. Toogood, J. Worsley, T. Lawry and W. J. Spackraan. the treasurer;, reported a credit balance of £7 2s 4d,: stating that £7 net had been the takings from the concert in. aid of .the school funds. Accounts amounting to - £2 17s 9d were passed for payment. Votes of thanks were passed to the teachers for the trpuble they took in preparing the children for the concert ;• also to' Mrs Gilpin for presents to the school. -'Mr C. Kent-Johnston was .elected to fill the vacancy on the committee yaSgised by Mr Searl’s resignatibn, »»h,d r '’ to be secretary as well. They headmaster reported an average attendance of 166. It was unanimously resolved that the compulsory clauses of the Education Act should be brought into use, and that parents should be summoned forthwith. ■ ' ’ Last evening a concert was held in aid of' St. Jeihja’s Church building fund. There was a very poor attendance, and the takV ings amounted to only Ao 7s 6d. Songs were ' given by 'itfrs-Toogood, Mrs. Hume, Misses Galagher,.JL Jjacksoh, Bowse," and Messrs Gajpd, "Hawke ; and B. : Yelverton. The secqfid' of the programme was a comedietta*nfititled “The Lady Mayor,” '".this being the best part of the programme. Mr A. Yule, of South Featherston, has just, got out. from Messrs McLaren, en- - gineers, Leeds, a six-horse power traction engine, which is being put together at the railway, station.

Stewart, engineer to the Featherston Eoad Board, v was thrown from his trap and severely bruised, through his horse getting frightened by. some j uvenile cricketers who were : -j V returning fo Martinborough. The trap was smashed. ' '9 Yesterday forenoon another slight accident happened, to a cart belonging to Mr 9 Bailey, who,, on discovering that he was driving his hbrse with the bit out of its 9 ; mqufh, took*the blinkers off to rectify the' ’ error, at which the horse bolted and collided with , a telegraph post just opposite Mr Fry s boot shop, breaking the post down and doing‘serious injury to the trap. Atthe S.iyP/- Court yesterday, before Mr T. Hutchison, S.M., prohibition orders were granted for the whole of the Wairarapa licensing district against Mrs Agnes Saunders and Mrs Annie Martin. The successful tenderers for the gates and horse yards for the forthcoming meet- : ing of the Wairarapa Racing Club are J. McCarthy and J. Barr £62 for- the gates, ’. and; T. Tocker £5 16s per diem-for the yards. It was unanimously resolved that the* privileges of i grandstand luncheon booth, afternoon tea tent, horse yards and gates be let only for the summer meeting. It was decided, that Mr Adam Donald should be clerk of the totalisator. It ; was .also decided that an iron fence should be erected in place of the proposed picket ■ one.- ; 9■'
