> .v Masterton, December 6. A. special meeting of the North rapa Liberal Association was held on Wednesday GVGning, wligu it was rosolvod to make a supplementary presentation to Mr A. W. Hogg, M.H.R., as the whole of the lists are not yet in. , . . It is reported that one or two. ot the elder girls at the Masterton School have been punished for seeking shelter under certain trees in the school ground. Their parents have in consequence withdrawn them from the school, and there is likely to bo a rumpus. The testimonial which is to bo presented 'to Mr A. W. Hogg, M.H.R., to-night, is nowon view in the window of Mr 1. L. Price’s photographic establishment. It is a neat, well written testimonial, handsomely framed and unique in its design. The wording reads as follows : “To A. v\ . Hogg, Esq., M.H.R. Dear Sir,—On behalf of the electors of the Masterton electorate we desire to express to you our keen appreciation of the services rendered by you to the district during the four years you have represented it in Parliament. Your Parliamentary conduct and your private efforts to promote the interests of your constituents as a whole have been regarded by us with a deep sense of satisfaction. As a slight expression of our gratitude we beg that you will accept this testimonial with the assurance that you retain the unreserved confidence of the electors of the district you so worthily represent. Signed, on behalf of the testimonial Committee, Charles lluohes (chairman), Thos. E. Price (treasurer), Arthur Vile (secretary).” . A meeting of stewards of the Wairarapa Trotting Club was hold last night, when it was reported that there was a surplus of <£B 15s from the late meeting. Stakes and
accounts were passed, and it was resolved to hold another meeting 1 in March at a place to be fixed. Masterton, December 7. The “social'’ tendered to Mr A. W. Hogg, M.H.R., in the Masterton Drill Hall •on Thursday evening, was a most successful affair. The chair was occupied by Mr Charles Hughes, J.P. In an interval in the programme, which embraced songs and dancing, the Chairman presented Mr Hogg with a purse containing fifty-six sovereigns and a testimonial. Mr Heagerty, Mayor of Greytown, referred to the many good qualities of the member for Masterton, and Mr Hogg suitably acknowledged the presentation. The company dispersed shortly after midnight. The Rev Father Goggan, S.M., Roman Catholic inspector of schools, has just completed the inspection of St. Patrick s /School. The papers show that of 64- children presented 53 passed. Important additions are about to be made to the auction mart of Messrs Lowes and lorns. . , Shearing is just about completed m the Alfredton district. The clip is not as good
as was expected. Mr J. F. Mercier, organiser for the New Zealand Workers’ Union, has just completed a successful, tour of the Lower
Valley. Since he commenced his tour he has distributed about three hundred members’ tickets. Mr C. A. Pownall has accepted the position of solicitor in Masterton under the Advances to Settlers Act. Masterton, December 8. The monthly meeting of the Masterton Trust Lands Trustees was held on Friday evening, Mr W. Lowes presiding. After the transaction of the ordinary business, a committee was set up, on the motion of Mr A; Vile, to report upon the desirability of providing a town hall for Masterton. A violent thunderstorm passed over Masterton this afternoon.
A meeting of settlers of Te Ore Ore, Opaki and. Manaia will be held this evening to consider the question of establishing a creamery. : s ' 7 The total number of young fish and eyed trout sent from ;the Masterton hatcheries this season to date is 779,620.
The pheasants at the Masterton aviary have produced 120 eggs this season.- " The ordinary meeting of the Masterton Lodge of Foresters was held on Friday evening, Bro. J. Vates, C.R J - g . Officers for the ensuing half-year were nominated as follow : : — C.R., Bros, E. Pragnell, Hoar and W. Blinkhorne; S.C.R., Bros. Pragnell and Blinkhorne; S.W., Bro. W. Blinkhorne; J.W., Bro. W. H. Colo; 5.8., Bros. J. Sillars and A. Gardner; J. 8., Bro. J. Sillars; Treasurer, Mr TV. Candy; Secretary, Mr E. Waddington. The mallard ducks at the Masterton aviary have finished laying, and have given 136 eggs altogether. Of this number 84 have been given to settlers to hatch out, and the balance have been set by Mr Ayson. , ’ " ’’ At the adjourned inquest to-day on the body of John McLeod, killed atTaueru by a fall from a horse, a verdict of accidental death was returned. Some damage is reported to have been done at Akura, owing to the thunderstorm.
Masterton, December 10.
A man named John Cuddy, alias Murphy, was charged in the Magistrate s Court this morning with having no lawful visible means of support, and "with assaulting Constable showed that the man, who quently convicted before, had-home to the town on Friday, and devoted himself to canvassing for beer. At a late hour on Saturday night he gave Constable Stewart a violent blow on the side of the head, and when an attempt was made to arrest him he drew a knife. The accused was sentenced to three months’ hard labour for assault, and three months for vagrancy. Mr Eli Smith, J.P., of Alfredton, who has been in town for some days, received a telegram this morning intimating that his daughter Ellon, 14 years of age, died suddenly on Sunday night. TVhen Mr Smith left home his daughter was apparently in good health, and lie is at a loss to account for her death., . Sheep for freozing are being despatched from the Masterton Railway Station in large numbers just now. This morning a special train left with 1400 sheep. The Rev J. Griffin, of Pahiatua, occupied the pulpit in the local Wesleyan Church yesterday. The congregations were large. A meeting of settlers of tlio ;X)paki f Manaia and Te Ore Ore was held in the Empire Hotel on Saturday evenifig, to consider the desirability of establishing another creamery in connection with the New Zealand Dairy Farmers’ Union, The chair was occupied by Mr I. Sykes. A large number of shares and cows were guaranteed in the room, and the meeting was adjourned for a week for the fixing of a site.
Mr Hone Heke, M.H.R., is at present on a tour of the Wairarapa, and iaaddressing meetings of. Natives. - ~ : ' The Rev A. C. Yorke held another successful open-air service on-. Sunday night. At a small station in the Wairarapa an attempt was made to reduce the price of shearing lambs to 15s per 100. .- Jhe shearers, being Union men, refused the reduction, with the result that the sheep Were shorn under the ruling wage. - r . About 21,000 sheep have been shorn on Maunsell’s Station, hear Tinui, this season. Constable Lawlor, of Masterton, who has been on sick leave for some days, is reported to be very seriously ill. Masterton, December 11. The monthly meeting of the Masterton School Committee was held on Monday evening, Mr E. Feist presiding. ,-The treasurer reported a credit balance ot AlO 19s 9d. The headmasterreported 577 children on the roll. Ho also referred to the matter of school discipline which had been mentioned in the papers. It was decided *to apply to the Trust Lands 1 rustees for a scholarship grant. The North Wairarapa Liberal Association met on Monday evening. The balancesheet in connection with the Hogg testimonial was read and adopted, and. _at * was decided to canvass in the outlying districts fora supplementary purse. Mr.A. Vue. was elected secretary, and member was enrolled. ' The bot fly is very active in Masterton just now. . _ . A valuable horse belonging to Mrs Duckett, of Miki Miki, has been gored, to death by a bull. , , * A public meeting to form a branch ot the New Zealand Workers’ Union is to be held here shortly. ~ Masterton, December 12. The quarterly sitting of the District Court was to have been held here to-day, but at the appointed hour the District Judge did not put in an appearance, and: a wire subsequently received intimated that he would not arrive until to-night, tne Court was consequently adjourned until tomorrow. Mr S. Mawby, of Detton, Rangitumau, informs me that his gauge registered one inch and seven points of rain in an hour on Saturday last. . , , , . „ _ , The Hessian fly is reported to have already made its appearance m the wheat
crops around Masterton. Owing to the havoc played by the fly last year very little wheat was grown this year, and consequently the damage this season cannot be so material as last. Another entertainment in aid of the fund for the repair of St. Matthew’s parsonage ii to be held next week. Two youths of Carterton have been fined 40s each and costs for disturbing a Salvation Army service. Professor Libhtwark, the well-known tamer of horses; gave a public exhibition of his skill this afternoon. Mr .falter Bentley appears in Masterton for two nights next week. The installation of W.M. and investiture of officers of .the Eketahuna Lodge of Masons takes place this evening. A number of Masterton and Lower Valley brethren intend being present.
