THE PREMIER AT AUCKLAND.
By Telegraph. —Press Association. Auckland, December 6. The Premier was occupied to-day receiving deputations. In reply to a deputation representing the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters, who offered several suggestions with regard to the co-operative system in the construction of public buildings, Mr Seddon said he would be glad for those in the trade to meet and send their suggestions to him. He agreed that the price for various classes of work should be based on the prices ruling in particular districts. He recognised also that overseers for building work needed to be men with a practical knowledge of such work. A deputation of the Early Closing Association also waited upon the Premier, thanking him for the Shop Hours Bill, and expressing the hope that next year the Government would abolish a large number of the exemptions. The Premier said the suggestion would be duly considered. Replying to a deputation asking that the Government should show recognition, in the form of promotion, to. Sergeant Gamble and the constables who took part in the expedition’ to the Great Barrier to bury bodies from the wreck of the Wairarapa, Mr Seddon promised to consider the matter. He said the conduct of the police was praiseworthy, and if promotion could be made without detriment to others, the Government would take some action. He suggested that a memorial be sent to him, as Defence Minister, to serve as a record on the subject.
