SPRING MEETING.

c : The Spring Meeting of the Wellington Amateur Athletic Club was held at the Basin Reserve on Saturday afternoon in splendid weather. The attendance was good, including a large number of ladies, close on 2000 persons being present during -the afternoon: The meeting was in every respect a -success, and the committee are to be congratulated on the result. The fields were large and the events were, in -almost every instance, well contested. Several were only won on the tape, showing that' the handicappers had done their v work * well. The ground was in capitals condition for running, and some good times were put up, although must be remembered that the course was slightly down hill, . Tlie standard time was reached by W. Talbut in.,the mile walk, Gore beat the standard by half- an - inch in the long jump, McCormack beat the standard for putting the. 161 b shot by lftSin and Angell reached the-standard forithe. three-mile race. Mr L. Jy, Nathan’s trophy for the most points in the. High Jump, Long Jump, Pole Jump and Putting the Weight, was won by R. Gore.,,The. trophy presented by Mr King, jeweller, Cuba streeti for the 250yds Handicap fell to S. W. Richardson, and Mr J. D. Barnett’s trophy for the Half-mile Flat was won by A. M. Stuart. McCardellThe judges performed their work very satisfactorily on the whole, but in the opinion of a good many onlookers who were in a position to judge, Pownall, and not Turnbull, was the winner of the Hurdle Handicap. -Mr C. A. Knapp, who has acted as referee at all the previous meetings of the Club, was unavoidably absent from illness, and his place was-taken by Mr H. D. Bell, M.H.R., who found the billet a light one. Mr O. A. Batkin acted as starter, and got off the various events with praiseworthy punctuality. Afternoon tea was provided for the lady visitors, and the. Garrison Band added to the enjoyment of - the proceedings by playing a good selection of music during the afternoon.

At the fourth lap Dodwell and Palmer led on even terms, Hawthorne being a good third. Shortly afterwards Dodwell, who was going strongly, forced the pace and wore down Palmer, and Whitcombe passed Hawthorne, Dodwell eventually winning by a yard. Time, 4min 41fsec. Fabian, 350yds. Lucy had passed all his men at two miles, and from this time pedalled easily, winning by sixty yards. Chegwidden and Hunt had an exciting race for second position, the former only winning by a yard or two. Time, 9mm 7 2-ssec. Pole Jump.- —F. Pownall, 7ft 10in, 1; R. A. Cameron, 7ft Bin, 2. J. 13. Barnett, G. J. Eeid and E. Gore. This was rather an amusing contest, although as a display of pole jumping it was by no means good. All the competitors failed several times to clear 7ft, and the strictly amateurish manner in which they went to work caused roars of laughter among the spectators. Three-mile Flat Handicap.— F. C. Angell, scr, 1 ; P. Clark (W ellington Harriers), 100yds, 2; E. W. Wallace, 120yds, 3. Also ran—S. P. Hawthorne, 60yds; B. Whitcombe, 150yds. Angell ran strongly throughout, and finished with plenty to spare. A good race ensued for second and third. Time, 16min lOsec.

The weather for the Amateur Athletic Sports was fine, but the attendance was moderate, and the fields small, and times were bad. W. F. Bennett won three races from scratch—viz., Half-mile, in 2min 9!sec; One-mile Championship of Otago, in 4min 50 4-ssec; and Three-mile Race, in 16min 53 l-ssec.
