A sample of tobacco grown and manufactured by Messrs A. M. Coupland and H. Wilkie at the jlutt from seed sent from 'Virginia to Mr Coupland’s grandfather 40 years ago is to hand. Lately Messrs Coupland and Wilkie have grown and manufactured the tobacco with a view to testing its practical value, and with the aid of a seven-ton press they have produced a very good strong tobacco. Mr Coupland believes that the cultivation of tobacco would return settlers about <£6o per acre, and that no difficulty would be experienced in ©rowing it in the sheltered portions of the s Hutt district. An expert would be required to teach settlers the processes of manufacture. Reginald Saunderson, a nephew of Colonel Saunderson, the well-known Ulster M.P., was arrested upon his own confession that he had murdered Augusta Dawes, a woman of bad repute, in the street at Kensington. The young man has been found to be insane. The Patients’ and Prisoners’ Aid Society of Dunedin is languishing with a debit balance of £22.
