The use of the milk tester is bringing tribulation to those farmers who have not bred for quality of milk so much as for quantity. If, however, it is fair to pay less to those whoae milk shows inferior quality, it is early fair to pay higher rates to those whose milk exceeds the required degree of excellence. But it is well known that quality as well as quantity of milk fluctuates from week to, week, and even from day to day. So ' that to be quite fair it ; would be necessary to frequently test every supplier’s milk. To do this a greatly increased staff of expert clerks would have to be employed. They at any rate would reap some benefit from the use of the milk tester. Since the balance-sheet, of the Egmont Farmers’ Union has beer, published there has been a great outcry that the manager nets too much of the profits, the shareholders too .little - , 'also that certain practices were allowed to continue which the Union was intended to abolish. The manager declares that his expenses and losses°reduce his commission very much, and that the practices alleged do not obtain. The whole matter should be carefully looked into in the interests of the Egmont farmers, and the public generally. , _ When will neighbours learh the economy of sufficient fences ? A lawsuit between " neighbours over a pair of fowls has just resulted in one of them having to pay Ll2 expenses. A fraction of that sum would have put up a substantial close paling fence that no fowl could pass, and would have.obviated all quarrelling find waste of time and journeying to a distant court. Mr H. J. Coutts has resigned his seat on the County Council, and has accepted the post \of valuator to the eounty. _ , v L 240 has been allocated for additions to the Stratford State School. _ ry We much regret to learn that Constable Leahy was taken seriously ill and had to be conveyed to the New Plymouth hospital on ' He had been indisposed and had asked for a month’s leave. His many friends will hope soon to see him restored to health.
