STRATFORD.
The Montague-Fredo Company gave an entertainment in the Town Hall on Friday. There was not a large audience, but on Saturday, when they gave a second performance, the attendance was larger. The fact is people here have had some keen disappointments either from companies proving inferior or not appearing according to advertisement, and that sort of experience considerably lessens their inclination to traverse country road 3 at night. Unfortunately the small local newspapers are _by no means as trustworthy as, they might be as guides in this connection. With them all are “clever companies," and highly deserving of patronage. , ' * 1 On Monday the Gourlay Company gave [ a variety entertainment in the Town Hall. The audience was not large. The Stratford Band will . give an open air concert next Saturday in Broadway. Their-programme is a good one, and will probably give much pleasure. There have been several accidents of runaway horses, caused by the railway engines whistling and frightening horses, which appear to be more than usually nervous at this time of the year when the grass is springing fresh and abundant. Two horses galloped with an express and freight of milk cans for a distance of four miles without collision or disaster, and that at the time in the morning when children were on' their way to school. On Saturday evening a trap had been sent to meet the train. The young driver had just gathered up the reins when the engine whistled, and the horse jibbed across the road. The engine then whistled a second time when the horse plunged forward suddenly, breaking several straps, and as it bolted forward the shafts came out and dragged along the ground. One was broken short off, but the other was driven about two feet into the hard ground of the road without breaking. The young driver, who had been in considerable danger, beld on firmly to the reins and managed so well that neither he nor the horse sustained any damage, In another case it was the
