The P. and O. S.S. Caledonia made its trial trip on the Clyde. Its horse power is 11,000 and its tonnage 7500. Luxurious accommodation is provided for 500 people. During the last seven years the company has constructed over 100,000 tons of new shipping, and at the present moment its fleet consists of 250,000 tons, and is valued at between six and seven millions sterling. Although the electric light is gradually coming into use, according to the latest estimate about 12,000,000 tons of coal are consumed per annum for gasmaking in the United Kingdom, over a quarter of that amount being consumed in London. Every householder to make his own gas is the idea of an American inventor. He uses wood instead of coal, and his apparatus can be attached to an ordinary kitchen range,
