The following scholarships were awarded by the Board of Education on the 21st in addition to those already published:—Maria Hitchcock, Mount Cook School; Therza Caverhill, Lower Hutt School. At last week’s meeting of the Board of Education a letter was received from Miss Jessie Millington, asking that she be appointed a teacher of plain cookery in the Board’s schools, The Chairman said that Miss Millington possessed very high credentials, but the financial position of the Board, which had now an overdraft of .£2OOO, would not permit of such an appointment, as strict economy would have to be exercised in future. Dr Newman suggested that a committee be appointed to consider what could be done. Messrs Young and Fraser approved of the establishment of cookery classes in the schools. The latter suggested that enquiries should be made as to the salary required by the applicant. Eventually it was decided that nothing could be done at present, in consequence of the state of the Board’s finances.
The first general meeting of the recently formed School Committees Association was held on the 21st in the Board of Education building, Mr B. B. Vincent (Mount Cook) being voted to the chair. Upwards of 30 delegates were present. Mr Jas. Robertson . (Mount Cook) was the secretary pro tem,..: The Chairman,.-in,, his opening resociation had been formed out of any ? , spirit of antagonism to the Boaid. It'was quite the contrary. The Chairmanthen introduced the first business by moving..“ That, thp‘Education Board of this district be respectfully urged to submit all applications for appointment as teachers ,to the committee of the school district interested prior, to any selection being made by .the Board, and to make regulations whereby committees will be enabled to communicate with the inspectors relative to the qualifications of the respective candidates.” The motion was seconded by Mr J. W. Davis (Newtown). Mr Hutchison (Kilbirnie) moved as an amendment the omission of all the words after “ selection being made by the Board.” After a long and rather discursive discussion, the amendment was carried by seven to six, each committee represented being assigned one vote. A ballot having been taken for the election of an executive, it resulted in fayour of the following gentlemen : Messrs Shine (Newtown), Feist (Masterton), Prouse (Te Aro), Koch (Thorndon), Vincent (Mount Cook), H. J. White (Clyde quay), Jennings (Vogeltown) and Bev Mr-Thompson (Petone). It was decided that the executive should hold office until the new school committees are elected, and they were left .to draw up a code of rules. . Votes of thanks were passed to the Board of Education and to the press. The meeting adjourned for a fortnight. In addition to the list already published, the following two Wellington candidates were successful in passing the recent Trinity College musical examination:— Elizabeth Shaw; junior pass, 82 per cent., and Daisy Marshall, junior pass, 60. Both candidates were pupils of Mr Axel W. Newton. In order to suit the convenience of His Excellency the Governor the arrangements for the prize distribution at the Wellington College and the Girls’ High School have been altered. The ceremony at the latter institution will tab® place on the 13th inst., and that at the former on the following afternoon.
